David Gough Courier Press In an effort to keep an important transportation link alive and vibrant, the Walpole Island band council has decided to purhcase and assume operations of the Walpole Island- Algonac Ferry Line. The Dean family based out of Port Lambton has owned the ferry for close to 60 years and recently decided to sell their business. Graham Hoogterp, who is helping to manage and operate the ferry, told the Wallaceburg Courier Press that buying the ferry line was "a good business decision" for the Walpole Island band council. The purchase closed on April 4, with Walpole Island taking over from the Dean family. The

attempted to get former owner Dale Dean to comment, but he couldn't be reached. Hoogterp said the ferry employs eight Walpole Island band members. He also said the ferry has a historical signifi cance. "Th ere has been a boat there documented for the past 100 years," Hoogterp said. Hoogterp said the ferry operations will remain business as usual, as most things will remain the same.
